Fate to become a professional tour guide

In 2008, I established Xin Chao Private Vietnam Tours. Since that time, I’ve had the good pleasure to collaborate with an incredible team from South to North Vietnam. Together, we work hard to always give our customers the finest opportunities to experience our city and nation.

I started assisting visitors to learn Vietnamese and navigate the city back in 2005, when I was employed at a neighborhood restaurant called Arab Kebab in the heart of Saigon. From there, I was able to assist expats and businesspeople with their problems adjusting to city life. My ability to interact with and assist foreigners traveling to or residing in Saigon and other cities in Vietnam quickly became apparent to me. Along with Michigan University lecturers, I also visited my homeland in 2008 to assess a charity initiative run by the Heifer International Organization. After two weeks, Amy and Paul proposed that I work as a freelance tour guide as they had loved my hospitality in showing them about Saigon’s markets, alleyways, and great food. They saw Saigon through local eyes and things that could not be found in tourist books.

I was honored to be named a Saigon Local Ambassador and found a lot of American clients on Craigslist. Thankfully, I came across Dwight, a US soldier who created the website for free. Since then, I’ve had additional possibilities, and in 2010 I looked into the options I was given when Lara, who took my kid and I on tours of Cuchi and Tay Ninh in Saigon, suggested me on TripAdvisor.

I increased my own knowledge of my home country and traveled more with my clients, creating and personalizing each trip not only in Saigon but throughout Vietnam.

Once again, I was lucky to meet Chris in Saigon in 2015. After a day-long city tour, he assisted me in creating a company profile on TripAdvisor under the name Nguyen Viet Bao Loc, which I eventually changed to Xin Chao Private Vietnam Tours.

From this point on, I also received additional reservations and discovered other fantastic locals or tour guides that aim to provide top-notch client service and authentic local experiences.

Our team is craving for finding and inspiring more locals to be Local Ambassadors

At Xin Chao, we think that every local has an interesting tale to share about their family, neighborhood, town, or food—they simply don’t know how to tell it in English, even if it would be helpful to tourists. As a result, we created a 9-step method to assist a local in becoming a qualified tour guide. Through this process, a local first becomes a Local Ambassador, which is a crucial step because it enables them to find a meaningful job by sharing local experiences with tourists with more pride and passion like I did, in addition to improving their English and earning extra money. With our continued support and at their discretion, they will then become a professional tour guide.
